Gregynog, the Welsh garden of Eden

Do you feel anxious and stressed? Do you think you need to go somewhere far from the crowd and the noise to relax and get some fresh air? Do you need to find yourself? Take a coach then, and in 3 hours you will get to Gregynog, a forgotten realm in the mid-Wales countryside, less than 10 miles from Newtown.

The whole thing is composed by a big ancient Victorian house surrounded by woods and beautiful parks. It is simply amazing to wander in the grounds and inhale that positive spirit, while admiring beautiful beds of leaves and trees with such colour shades. (Autumn there is unique, believe me)

Be ware, if you are some kind of communication freak or mobile addicted, then you might have some problems, as there is no mobile network nor internet connection. There is only one paved road to reach Gregynog Hall, that is winding and narrow. And the 3 hours journey spent in the same seat with your 70cm square of personal space are also factors to take into account if you are up to go there. I can tell you that it's worth every single minute of the journey, even if you'll be sick the whole way. You'll be delighted and hopefully enlightened.

The place is peaceful and inspiring; we really managed to focus on our projects without distractions and work productively.

Last but not less important, the food is very good and the chefs bake bread and cakes daily.

If you are not convinced about going there yet, you may change your mind after having taken a look at some pictures of the place.

- nel PD non c'è unità, regna la frammentazione - ergo, tornare ad una voce dominante, altrimenti nisba. E' così che il Pdl ha costruito la sua struttura, puntando sempre e comunque su UNA voce, mantenendola anche nei momenti più improbabili e nelle situazioni più ridicole;
- la leadership deve essere carismatica e decisa su di una linea precisa. Bersani non deve commettere gli errori e le goffaggini di Franceschini, che non ha mai visto al di là del proprio naso, non ha mai battuto i tasti su cui doveva battere in termini di critiche sulle questioni politiche e non, teneva il piede in 3 scarpe e aveva paura di sbilanciarsi ogni volta che apriva bocca - si chiama opposizione per un motivo, si tratta di politica, non di un pic-nic nel parco;

Radio 4 about Griffin

I have just been listening to the sunday news coverage on Radio 4, and I've heard a remarkable comment about thursday night Question Time, with the commentator saying that "Griffin did a pretty good job, easily digging his own grave."

Hey Nick, it was not a great idea to go there, after all, wasn't it?!

Non so perchè e non so dirvi come."

Stonehenge, in all its misterious beauty

The BNP on the BBC

Thursday night's Question Time on BBC1 hosted a major event, a controversial discussion with a controversial politician, leader of the British National Party's Nick Griffin. For me it was such an interesting occasion to get a deep insight of a hot topic like this; my "aspiring journalist spirit" was ready and went out to look for a television, as it sadly lacks here at home.
Various protests took place in front of BBC in London that day, for many thought it was not admissible to let him take part in the show. As BBC pointed out (and i share those words), however, it is not the media task to silence and censor. If BNP is suitable enough to be voted by citizens, why would it not be suitable for political debate on TV?
Griffin is known to be a racist, a pure-white fascist craving for a white Britain, where all the "non-British" would be gently kicked out of the country. Most protesters reckoned these elements to be enough to prevent him from taking part to the programme; personally, I believe they confused the journalists job with the government job. BNP, for as much controversial and absurd as it may look, is a proper party (in theory) like all the others, accepted and regulated by the law and suitable for elections.
This party's proclaims and beliefs do not influence the aim of the media, which is that of providing balanced information. It is a fact that BNP has 2 seats in the European Parliament, gained with 900.000 votes; Question Time focuses on political debates, Griffin has a voice (politically speaking), so it is perfectly fair to host him on the TV show.
Others said that by direct confrontation on serious matters, Griffin would have just shown what lied behind the facade and the slogans (clearly not much), and this is basically what really happened. His performance was poor, far from coherent and insecure; he wouldn't answer questions properly and, in short, wasn't talking much. A few times he was not given the time to speak and explain, but in any case, he did not struggle at all to have the chance to answer when they didn't let him.

Memorable: "I changed my mind, I don't know why and I can't say how"...pretty confused, eh?!

With all probability, such a performance didn't persuade any new voter to slide to the BNP side; wheter it was right or wrong to host the event, the protesters outside the BBC studios should find a few minutes to think about what democracy is about. They might get to a slightly different conclusion.

almost forgetting

I was almost forgetting to say that I am supposed to get the powerpoint presentation ready, and I should do it asap (like..having done it already), although I won't have time.

And, of course, when you really need your mobile with you for some reasons (like today, I need to be available and I'll have to phone somebody) the batteries run out!

The Matrix cannot be so badly organize...I need to update my version of it

Time eventually shrinks

One day you have a couple of hours of classes, then a break, another hour and that's it, you can go home and have a relaxed lunch and take your time during the afternoon to do all the stuff you feel like doing.
Some other days it's not like that, and it is just unbelievable how things are capable of tighting together so messily. Today, for instance, between the 2 classes there was group meeting; after that I rolled home and had lunch, and really needed to do the laundry, so I went for it. Once I'm back, I realize that it's already 4.30, I still have to take a shower and in an hour I'll have to be at university again, for the film session. After that there'll be Question Time on BBC, tonight featuring Nick Griffin from BNP..which is something an aspiring journalist definetely cannot miss, for its "controversy". I did not have breakfast, had a proper lunch and I have absolutely no idea wheter I'll have any other time to eat during the next part of the day.
And, btw, I am tired and want to sleep!
P.S. I missed hardcore garneding

As you say, Antonio

It's easier to pull the trigger than play guitar. Easier to destroy than to create.

"No, non devo vederlo.

That's weird

On a peaceful saturday morning, your beloved Miguel had got up around 10 and had a late breakfast with tea and cookies. Later on he was at the laptop checking his emails, and it took him a little while to realize that the doorbell was ringing (his room faces the back and the sounds from the street come quite muffled). As he got downstairs and opened the door, there stood this Asian girl with a little trolley by her side. "Hi, I'm a friend of *** (Miguel's flatmate). Does he live here?", she goes. "Yes, he does. Are you lookin' for him?". And that was her criptical answer:
"No, I just wanted to be sure he lived here. Listen, I am in a rush now, can I take a quick shower?"
Now, a couple of awkward seconds passed by (they felt like hours, I can tell you:), after which Miguel said "yeah, sure, no problem. Come inside, I'll show you where it is." He took her upstairs and showed where the shower and the toilet were, then went back to his things. He hasn't seen her again ever since. She took a shower and left, as she had arrived some time before.
Miguel is now considering the idea of placing a sign outside: 10minutes SHOWER, £2, HOT WATER INCLUDED. Discounts available for groups.

Thanks E.

A: Why don't we go to Tarragona to eat kebab then? We have an excuse.
B: You don't have an EXCUSE, you have a FRIEND!

That was very sweet indeed :)

I hate burocracy pt.2

Just when you start feeling a little bit calm and settled, that's when you do the major mistake: you think that eventually everything is going the right way and there is nothing left out of place, after so much initial effort. If you reckon that, well, then you are bloody WRONG! This morning I received an email from the finance department, telling me that the expiry date for settling my financial situation with the university was close and "recommending" to do it as soon as possible. NO, FORMS AGAIN! But i just thought: "I perfectly remember to have done this in my first week here, almost a month ago; it took a whole morning, course I remember it!." And by the way, the mail was highly criptical, not saying anything in particular, just reminding the deadline without actually stating what my situation was. In full, a pointless email.
I promptly answered, as my instinct started poking in the back of my head whispering "be ware, rain's coming", then I just called trying to get some detailed info. Guess what? The forms I filled are not there, nobody has ever heard about me, nor there is any visible sign of any previous attempt to settle my financial situation in the last 10,000 years. (So whom I talked to? Was I dreaming about filling forms?) I was quickly heathing up, but after a few growls and swearwords through gritted teeth, I managed to settle the whole thing at the phone (once again). It looks like I have a normal financial statement now (I had it a month ago, i swear), and I am waiting for a REAL letter to confirm it.
Is there a place in this holy land of god with absolutely no burocracy and forms? If yes, feel free to post it here, with a google map initerary.

Disillusione.

They are all in it together...so what?

The British Parliament these days is a place where you would't want to be; the eyes of the Britons are all gazing at their main governmental institution with suspect and disdain (not to mention general anger). The scandal about MPs using public money to face their private expenses has thrown a dark shadow over them. Prime Minister Brown was told to repay £12,415 (for cleaning and gardening), Tory leader Cameron must provide more details on mortgage claims, wheter Democrat Clegg is ordered to pay back £910 (gardening again:). The way Britain is dealing with this issue shows that citizens do not accept that their money is misused in any way, and somebody is actually doing something about it. I can't help to think of Italy and the fact that misusing public money for private interests and leisures is a sad matter that comes up every now and then (and not just for dvds and gardening), without any concrete action taken against it. The first reactions I had while reading about the £910 that Clegg is due to pay back were 1-a laugh, and 2-"but that's nothing, it could have been much worse!". Sad but true, honesty and morality have different and sometimes very far meanings.

It's sad, though

I reckon it strucks me because, as probably most people of my age, I had watched him on TV for years and years when I was a kid, sitting in front of the telly in the morning waiting for Kinght Rider (Supercar in Italy) and Baywatch, working out these absurd ideas about how cool California was and planning to go there and get a job as a lifeguard. Those dreams are long gone, as well as David "Mitch Buchannon" Hasselhoff soulshine. After a brilliant takeoff with the famous TV series and a parallel involvment in music (with hits such as "Du" and "Looking for Freedom"), his star started shaking more and more, giving way to a slow but relentless decline of both his film career and personal life. Last week hospitalization in Capio Nightingale Hospital in London for ethyl coma after a heavy drinking session is the last of many boxing matches fought between the actor and his alcohol abuse. Hasselhoff is the incarnation of the artist who first jumped to the sky and then fell without any hooks to hang to.
I believe I can speak for many of those who watched him and sincerely hope he finds his wave again soon, after too much time of uncertainty.

Chissenefrega?

Who Cares?

Do you know one of those days in which you go home from school and your mum asks "So, what did you learn today"? And you go "nothing, same old stuff", or some other answers that carry quite the same meaning. Actually, today I DID learn something at school.
When talking about news, journalism or any other matter that interests you, from drinking games to cricket matches, there is an element that makes a HUGE difference within the communication. It's a simple question: WHO CARES? Answer that, if you can.
No, don't look at me like that, let me explain. Let's suppose for a moment that I am telling you about the situation of violence and brutality that is affecting Tibet; I put all my effort and knowledge to transmit you something I consider important and I reckon you should know; in the end you ask: who cares? and leave me speechless. Or about the major issue of global warming, the last scandal concerning Maradona and so on. If you ask who cares? and I am not able to answer, then communication wouldn't take place, because I simply couldn't attract your attention with what I was saying. In a field such as journalism, attraction is a keypoint; if the journalist can't make his piece attractive for the reader, capture his attention, then he may have written the most relevant things EVER, but if you don't care you won't read it. Good information doesn't last long by itself. In order be transmitted, it has to attract, even to "lure" the reader's attention; this doesn't mean, of course, manipulation. It means that good communication skills are fundamental, for there are many many ways of saying the same thing, and the journalist's job is to find the one you would care to listen to. Who cares then? I do!

Good Night and Good Luck

Good Night and Good Luck è stato il primo, proiettato la settimana scorsa.

Good Night and Good Luck

In our long way to enlightment, aspiring journalists like me are taught in many different ways during lectures, seminars, workshops and film sessions. Each week students are shown a different film dealing with some aspects or figures of journalism. Good Night and Good Luck was the subject of the first screening, last week. It is an intelligent and sharp film, set in the U.S. during the 40s and 50s, when the fear of communism was spreading and the government conducting its battle against it with all the weapons available, willing to defeat it at any cost (often stepping over human rights and freedom). In such a tense situation, TV-journalists Ed Murrow and Fred Friendly have their own clear ideas about their job as providers of information, and denounced several cases where American citizens were accused of having links with "the commies" and punished without any evidence. The film is a true story and deals with major issues such as freedom of expression, morality, censorship, ethics. Watch it, it's money!

(o quasi)

Grazie Minh!

Traditional Vietnamese Medicine

Sometimes (but JUST sometimes) I find myself in lucky situations. These last days, for instance, while I was at home sick for the (Swine?) flu and complaining about my burning throat, my flatmate from Vietnam eventually said: "Hey, in Vietnam we have this great traditional infusion which is perfect for that." And off she was, helping your poor sickman. And it did help, my troath is fine now, although the cough still remains. It is very easy to prepare it, you just need a glass of very hot water, to which you add slices of lemon (WITH the skin, it has lots of healing skills) and a spoon of honey. Stir, drink, and recover!

Thanks Minh

Starnuti, Tosse, Tremori

Ho l'influenza ("A?!

Shaking Coughin Sneezing

Extract from Miguel's journal, Friday 2 October

It's called statistics. Only a few days after reflecting about what I considered (and I still do) "too much fear and concern" about Swine flu, here I am stuck in my house with fairly interesting symptoms such as cough, dry troath, body ache, temperature and feeling generally bad.
I've got the flu, and I'm not too much surprised about it. it's easy to understand: seating in the same room for hours every day with lots of people doesnt really help, especially if most of them cough and sneeze all the time..
but my mood is still high (for now), there's the weekend and I can get plenty of rest. I just need my daily copy of the Metro and tons of paracetamol and tea! I'm ready to fight!

wanna share my germs? ;)

Beh, state attenti certo. Evitate comunque di urlare terrorizzati "AHH! INFLUENZA SUINA!" ogni volta che qualcuno starnutisce. Non sarebbe carino.

Dial 999 in case I deteriorate

As most people know, these are delicate times in terms of health, with Swine flu spreading around the world through bags, tissues, handshakes and sneezes. Here in Britain though, people've gone far from simple prevention. Since we (we=new students) arrived in Cardiff there has been a huge information campaign with leaflets, advertisments, signs, soaps and flu buddies! Each student has to identify a friend who lives in close proximity, willing to alert the NHS in case you get Swine Flu. By then you are not supposed to leave the house, medicines will be brought to you by your flu buddy, and you just stay where you are! Do not even think about going out, you might extend the virus to others!

Ok I know it is for our health and everything, but I still reckon there is just too much fear about this. Even if we are not aware of it, every year the "normal flu" kills thousands of people, both in Europe and elsewhere.
True is that, so far, a growing number of people affected by A-Virus has died, but ALL of them were already seriously debilitated by major deseases, not linked with Swine Flu.

What to say then? well, of course be careful, but just dont shout "AHH! SWINE FLU!" everytime you hear someone sneezing. it wouldnt be that nice.

Moquette, edera e porte tagliafuoco

FIRE DOOR. KEEP SHUT.

Between Carpets, Ivy and Fire Doors

A major step one has to make once moving to the UK, in order to deeply feel a "British" way of living, is that of the house! Living in a real British house is an experience and it takes at least a few days to get really into it and used to it. Yet, after almost two weeks of living here, I am still impressed when i wake up in the morning (like "hey, where am I? ah yeah, that's my room!")

A first thing to take into account is the carpet basically everywhere. every corridor or room has the carpet, which for me personally is nice, as I love to go barefoot. on the other hand, it is rumored that it brings dust, and by the way, it's almost impossible to mop it or wash it in any way! so I guess I'll just have to cope with the vacuum cleaner. I need a big one!

The kitchen is full of devices and appliances that I didnt have in my house down in the Italian countryside: a kettle, a toaster, a couple of rice cookers (which is not that british) and so on. And then of course, the BACKYARD! Passing trough a traditional British door I get to my traditional British backyard, enclosed in a stone wall behind the house. It's not big, but its there, with a traditional British ivy that grows up the fence and the backwall of the house, almost reaching the top floor. It's nice! I wonder wheter it brings humidity inside, though...

Just one thing is a bit annoying, although it's there for safety reasons: a huuuge number of FIRE DOORS! Every few feet there is one, in each corridor. I have to open 4 doors on my way to the loo! man, 4! I know that in case of emergency they'd turn definetely useful, I am aware of that, but still...too many!

Anyway it's quite easy to cope with that aspect, and my knowledge of Britain is growing faster than ever! FIRE DOOR. KEEP SHUT.

cheers!

The poor little Italian out in a stranger land

Here I am, blogging (at least trying to) from my room with a mug of traditional british tea next to me, and lots of brand-new ideas and resolutions.
There'd be so much to say now and to write about, since in the last 10 days I did quite a few things, such as moving to another country, enrolling to a welsh university, settling down in a new city, moving out to another house, sinking in loads of papers, forms and various documents I had to fill in. Man, I hate burocracy! But nonetheless, my will dies hard and resolutions die even harder (within the first week..).
as they say, mornings bring enlightment, and my backyard faces the sunrise!

be happy then, for it's not raining...yet!

Cheers!
