Let's cooperate

As reported by all the main Italian newspapers, the right-wing government is starting a series of meetings aiming to a final decision about the new regulation concerning the structure of trials, the so-called "quick trials".

As PM Berlusconi and all his entourage says, it is a move to shorten the duration of the trials (which, at the moment, could be endless) and simplify the procedures. What the opposition argues (when there IS an opposition, which does not have to be taken for granted) is that the proposed changes would just meet the goal of tying up the trials, wrongly shortening the statue of limitations.

The same opinion is shared by the association of the judges, who sees in the proposed reform another try, made in Arcore, of limitating the judges functions and making them "harmless".

On the other hand, as titled by the papers today, Berlusconi is opening its discussions to the opposition, to share viewpoints and agree to a same position. Which, in other words, simply means "You folks shut up and agree with what I have in mind." It is interesting how the word cooperation has so many different, and sometimes opposite, meanings.
