Obama sacks Afghan war commander

General Stanley McChrystal, the top man in charge of the ISAF operation in Afghanistan, has been sacked this evening by US president Barack Obama, following the chaos ignited by an interview given by McChrystal to Rolling Stone.

In the Rolling Stone article - available here - the general and some of his closest staff openly criticised figures in the White House, calling one "clown" and another "a wounded animal". McChrystal had to face hard accusations of insubordination, and was summoned to the White House this afternoon for a face-to-face talk with the president.

McChrystal has been now replaced with Gen. David Patraeus, the chief commander of the war in Iraq.
